Foreword:

The Nikon D5000 is a new breed of DSLR camera. It features a 12.3 megapixel sensor working in tandem with the EXPEED image processing system. It can also record HD movies at 1280×720 pixels with the D-Movie function. The camera has a 2.7 inch vari-angle LCD display that makes it easier for you to compose shots from difficult angles. The extensive ISO range of 100-6400 should be enough for most lighting conditions. There are a lot more amazing shooting features to help you get beautiful images including a 4fps burst shooting mode, 100,000-cycle shutter unit, quiet shooting mode, an 11-point autofocus system with 3D Focus Tracking, and Active D-Lighting.

+Ves:

Comfortable mid-size body with pivoting LCD screen

Very good color accuracy and long exposure results

Outperformed all cameras in our comparison group; noise reduction filter unusually effective

Low distortion with kit lens; wide dynamic range

Extensive selection of presets including multiple fluorescent options

Articulated LCD allows shooting from varied angles using Live View

Highly customizable Picture Controls; lots of scene modes; sophisticated autofocus system

Nice combination of comfort and portability; extensive online tutorials. Few buttons to access shooting settings directly

Very low noise levels

Natively progressive 24p frame rate limits trailing and blur

Good low light color, decent low light sensitivity, excellent low light noise results

Multi-angle LCD is a lifesaver for shooting video

-Ves:

Not many buttons for direct access to settings

Plastic feel

Some color shifting with reds and oranges

Image sharpness is disappointing

Less accurate than others in our test group

Rudimentary slideshow capability

No autofocus motor in camera

No depth of field preview

Few buttons to access shooting settings directly

Color accuracy was only average, overall image was too bright

Sharpness is limited by 1280 x 720 maximum image resolution

ISO adjustment isn’t available for video

Many controls don’t work with video mode

Final Word:

The Nikon D5000 DSLR is a great camera that makes possible a wonderful blend of simplicity and fun, plus beautiful image quality. If you are upgrading from your old camera and you can spend that extra cash, this camera is definitely worth it. It has a very easy and simple to use interface with the buttons very well placed. The D5000 can be said as a scaled-down D90 squeezed into a smaller and lighter body. It is not as powerful though but it has additional editing tools and scene modes that are both useful and fun to learn.

Foreword:

The Nikon D3000 is a new DSLR camera designed for the beginner who wants to take photos without worrying about the camera settings. You can specify in the intelligent Guide Mode what kind of image you want to shoot and it then automatically optimizes the camera settings for you to get the best possible pictures. If you become familiar with the settings, you can then be confident to use the Guide Mode manually. The Nikon D3000 comes with a 10.2 megapixel sensor, a 3-inch LCD screen display, EXPEED processing system, an 11-point autofocus system, and a 3 fps continuous shooting mode.

+Ves:

Compact but not too small to handle, with substantial feel in the hands

Decent long exposure test results thanks to good image noise performance under low light

Acceptable though not outstanding results

Image-stabilized lens effective in most situations, particularly with moderate shake levels

Good results in Auto mode, very accurate with manual WB reading

Extensive selection of playback displays and in-camera editing options

Compatibility with most Nikon lenses; extensive flash mode controls

Upscale autofocus and metering systems for entry-level camera; innovative Guide shooting mode

Simple unintimidating camera layout; programmable Fn button; strong user guide and learning materials

-Ves:

All-plastic body; no rubberized grip

Poor color accuracy scores

Minimal control over noise reduction settings

Unimpressive sharpness results

Incandescent light baffles Auto WB system

Mediocre slide show capability

No Live View; no video cable provided

No custom picture controls; few scene modes

Limited selection of direct-access buttons for frequent settings

Final Word:

The Nikon D3000 is a bit expensive for a basic DSLR camera. But expect the price to drop eventually in a couple of months since this was just recently introduced in the market. This camera is a good entry level for new photo enthusiasts or it could be a wise upgrade if you have the older Nikon D40 basic DSLR. The design of the D3000 is ideal for the beginner because of its user-friendly Guide Mode that will allow learning the basics of photography faster.

Foreword:

The Canon Digital Rebel XSi DSLR camera is an update to the older XTi with a better resolution of 12.2 megapixels and a handful of additional new features. This includes a bigger 3-inch display screen, an improved autofocus system, and optical image stabilization in its kit lens. It is also the very first Canon Rebel camera to have a Live View mode, which provides the user live preview of the subject on the LCD display before taking the shot. Though the advantages over the XTi are not outstanding, there is an improvement in image quality as it offers pictures with plenty of details and superb colors.

+Ves:

Great color and resolution in images

Big, bright 3-inch LCD screen with wide viewing angle

Comfortable to hold and good control placement

Great full auto mode, plus manual modes

Decent live view mode for point-and-shoot users

Can save both RAW and JPEG files

Supports SD and SDHC cards

Decent value for money

-Ves:

Significant noise

Poor manual focus and Manual mode

Manual mode is awkward to use

No variable speed for burst mode

Autofocus is slow and noisy with kit lens

No separate control for resolution and quality

Low resolution video output only

Not the cheapest SLR available

Final Word:

The Canon EOS Rebel XSi DSLR camera is solidly-built but not too heavy. It feels nice in the hand and feels sturdy. It is ideal for the beginner who is new in DSLR but wants to be like a pro with the strong features of this camera. If you require shooting HD video without the need of another camera, you should consider the T1i model, which has almost the same capabilities plus the video function. The Xsi is certainly a camera worth the investment.

Continuous shooting mode is available at 3.4 fps and ISO can be set with an amazingly wide range from ISO 100 up to ISO 12800 in whole increments. The camera also features Live View with three settings – Quick, Live and Face Detection Live. It also has a Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit to combat any dust particles that may settle on it.

Final Word:

The Canon EOS Rebel T1i is a good buy in its class if the price is the issue. You get the best value for your money considering the capabilities of the camera. The camera is easy enough to operate for those who are new to photography and yet also configurable for advanced users. Its HD video recording function is a bonus if you’re not into serious videography. And if you do not need the video feature at all, you can settle for the lower-priced XSi model.

Foreword:

Canon EOS 7D is an 18 megapixels DSLR camera featuring a new APS-C CMOS sensor, which is also designed and manufactured by Canon. This new camera’s sensor offers a wide ISO range of 100-12,800 with a revised photodiode and microlens construction. It also offers dual DIGIC 4 processors that allow continuous shooting at 8fps and an improved 19-point cross-type auto-focus system. Included are an Intelligent Viewfinder and a 3 inch Clear View II LCD screen that is used for the camera’s Live View and Movie modes. Full HD 1080 video is supported by the camera. The Canon EOS 7D is also equipped with a Speedlite Transmitter that makes controlling external Speedlite flashguns easy with no additional accessories required. The camera body is built from magnesium alloy and is weather-sealed.

+Ves:

Solidly built, weather-sealed body

Accurate color overall; handles long exposures very well

Levels reasonably low through ISO 800; effective noise reduction system

Good sharpness results; excellent dynamic range for high-contrast shooting; effective image stabilization

Highly accurate automatic white balance system

Nice selection of playback views; easy navigation; full-featured video playback; extensive direct print options

Bright 100% viewfinder; handsome high-res LCD; long battery life

Fast and flexible new autofocus system; high burst rate; depth of field preview

Excellent textured grip; dual control dials; easy-to-manage menu system; first-rate user manual

Strong saturation levels; noise levels were very good in bright light

Good motion performance in both 24p and 30p frame rates

Very good low light performance all around

Manual controls are easy to use in conjunction with video mode; 3.5mm external mic jack is a nice touch

-Ves:

Bulkier than other models

Best color modes under-saturated, with sharpness turned down

Noisier than others at high ISO settings

Chromatic aberration noticeable at image edges

Custom white balance produced disappointing results

Lacks in-camera editing capabilities

Slow Live View autofocus; no scene modes

Multi-controller joystick feels imprecise

Color accuracy wasn’t quite as good as the competition.

Sharpness was a bit lower than other DSLRs that shoot 1080p video.

No live autofocus; stationary LCD makes shooting hand-held video difficult.

Final Word:

The Canon EOS 7D is designed to be the tool of choice for serious photographers and semi-professionals. This camera is very impressive and it also has a lot to offer being an HD video camera. It can allow many Canon rebel camera users to learn and master the craft of photography while using the camera. It is no doubt one of the top cameras in the market right now and definitely you won’t regret buying this camera.
